Salem, the Series : Between Fiction and Reality

Welcome, our dear readers

Season 1                             Season 2                            Season 3

We are three students in our last year at Université Paris-Diderot and we created this blog in order to show the Anglo-saxon History through fiction.

Our focus will be on Salem, an American series created by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon. Its genres are supernatural, horror, drama, thriller and contains elements of gothic romance. The filming of the series began on November 8, 2013 in Shreveport (Louisiana) reflecting 17th-century Massachusetts. It was shown for the first time on an American channel in 2014 and online on Netflix since 2016 in France. It is still in production but the series is already composed of three seasons, about ten episodes each of forty minutes.

Synopsis: 1685, captain John Alden flees the Puritanism in the city of Salem and wages war on Native Americans wishing to get back to his lover Mary Sibley. However, seven years later he comes back to Salem and discovers a city dominated by the fear of witches. Salem turns into a hunting field after witchcraft and every man or woman accused of such an act is cruelly and painfully punished.

Throughout the series, we shall see if fiction modifies the reality of historical facts and if so, how it is done and we shall analyze how such a historical period is used to entertain a modern audience.
